The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts locked up 2nd Place in the NSHL with a split in their two games against the Clarenville caribous in Clarenville this weekend. The Cataracts won a thrilling come-from-behind victory Saturday night at the Clarenville Event Centre overcoming a 3-0 deficit after two periods by scoring 6 unanswered in the 3rd. David Phillpott and Matt Quin both scored twice for the Cats with singles coming from Chris Peach and Tyler Whitehead. Sunday’s game followed much the same pattern early as the Cats trailed 3-1 after two periods but could not repeat their 3rd period performance of the night before as the caribous scored 3 in the final frame to pull away and claim a 6-1 victory. Chris Peach had the Cats lone goal. By earning two points on the weekend the Cataracts secured 2nd place and will now face the Corner Brook Royals in a Best-of Seven semi-final starting Saturday March 3rd at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium. The Royals clinched 3rd place this weekend picking up 3 points on the east coast winning in a shootout Saturday night against the Eastlink Ceebee Stars and then coming up short in a shootout against the Mt. Pearl Blades on Sunday afternoon. The win by the Caribous Sunday afternoon means they will finish 1st over all and will play either the Blades or the Ceebee Stars in their semi-final. That final playoff position will be decided next weeknd when the Blades host the Cats for a pairs of games at the Glacier while the Ceebee Stars travel to Corner Brook for two games against the Royals at the Pepsi Centre.

The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts have announced the list of players they have submitted as being eligible to join the team for Allan Cup play in April. In addition to the current Cataracts roster the team was able to name 19 additional players (17 skaters & 2 goalies) from any registered AA Senior team in the province. The team added 19 names to give them the most possible options. The players were chosen after consultation with the GM’s of the other teams who were asked to inquire about player interest/availability. Not everyone contacted was available. The Cataracts have not spoken to the players directly. The actual list of players who will participate in the event will be determined after further consultation with current players to determine specific needs. Obviously not all players will be asked to accompany the team.

All current Cataracts players are on the list.

Here are the names of players from other teams that were included in the Allan Cup roster submitted January 15/2012:

Colin Archer Justin Barbour Jordon Bonnevile Matthew Bragg Jeff Caron Jason Churchill Ryan Derosiers Brad Dyke Mike Dyke Chris Hulit Darren Langdon Steve North Andrew Pearcey Colin Power Mark Roebothan Dustin Russell Matt Thomey Nathan Welton Brad Woods

In addition, the names of Scott Cantwell, Cory Blackmore, Chris Thorne and Matt Vaters were also included on the list.

It’s hard to believe but as the Holiday Season winds down it’s time to once again turn our attention to Senior Hockey and the return of the Cataracts to the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium after a prolonged Christmas break. The Cataracts next two home games are scheduled for SATURDAY, JANUARY 14 AND SUNDAY, JANUARY 15TH against the Eastlink Ceebee Stars.

The President of the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts, Paul Glavine, was interviewed in Harbour Grace this past Sunday on the Cataracts Audiocast about the question of which venues should be used for the Herder Championship Series. Glavine made it very clear that the Cataracts organization is adamantly opposed to HNL’s announcement that Herder finals games must be played in either Corner Brook at the Pepsi Centre or in St. John’s at Mile One Centre. Glavine says the fans who most deserve to see the Herder games in person are those who have supported the teams all season long. He added that if the Cataracts were fortunate enough to make it to the Herder Finals again this year they would want home games to be played at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium out of loyalty to the fans, the sponsors and the town that has shown so much support to the team, not just this year but over the course of many years. When asked about the revenue that might be lost by playing the games in the smaller local rink, Glavine was quick to say that for the Cataracts, being loyal to their fans far outweighed any potential money grab. He said the long term viability of the team and the league does not rely on Herder revenue at the end of the season but rather on developing great relationships between teams and their supporters. He concluded by saying that the Cataracts will continue to access all possible means to lobby HNL to reverse their decision before the end of the season.

Following a disappointing weekend in Corner Brook the Cataracts turned things around in Harbour Grace this past weekend, sweeping two games from the Eastlink Ceebee Stars. The Cats now head into the Christmas break just a single point behind the 1st place Clarenville Caribous and eight points up on 3rd place Corner Brook. Saturday night saw the Cataracts play a solid defensive road game, limiting the Ceebee Stars scoring chances and pulling out a 5-2 victory. Chad Earle led the Cats with two goals while Greg Hoffe, Andre Gill and Andrew Brennan chipped in with one each. Ray Dalton and Andrew Feehan scored for the home team.

Sunday saw the Ceebees rebound with a strong effort controlling the play for most of the early part of the game. Strong goaltending by Mark Yetman kept the Cats close until they got their offense rolling late in the game. A 3 goal outburst in the 3rd period by Andre Gill led the Cats to a hard fought 5-3 victory. Chad Earle and Greg Hoffe each scored their second goal of the weekend earlier in the game. Mark Tobin had two goals in a losing effort with newly acquired defencman Colin Archer adding a single. The Cataracts are now off until Jan 14th.
