The 2011-2012 season for the Cataracts came to an official end when the team played its final game, in the semi finals of Canada’s National Senior Hockey Championship, the Allan Cup in Lloydminster. While the team would have preferred a more successful outcome to that game, the Cataracts proved themselves to be capable representatives for our region. The Cataracts organization, players and staff, would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to our fans for the tremendous support they showed again over this past season, making the Joe Byrne the best place to play home games. The team would also like to express its thanks to our many sponsors. No Senior Hockey team can operate without the support of the local business community and here in the Exploits Region we are grateful to have such a generous and supportive group of business people. Clearly there are many questions to be answered and issues to be dealt with over the summer in order for Senior Hockey to continue next fall. We are hopefull that all parties involved will be able to work through these and that the Cataracts will return to play again next season. As always we will endeavour to keep you informed of any developements as they occur in the coming months. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Joe again in a few months. GO CATS GO!!

The Cataracts will play in the Semi-Finals of the Allan Cup this afternoon against the Southeast Prarie Thunder of Manitoba in what will be a rematch against their opening game opponent. Game time is 4pm local time, 7:30pm in NL . The Cataracts advanced by winnning their Quarter Final game last night 5-1 against the Pacific Region Champion, the Stony Plain Eagles of Alberta. Chris Peach opened the scoring for the Cataracts in the first period before Brandon Skinner tied the game up later in the 1st. The 2nd period was dominated by the Cataracts as they scored 3 unanswered goals by Andrew Brennan, Matt Thomey, and David Philpott. The Cataracts played a solid defensive 3rd period keeping Stony Plain off the scoreboard, while Chris Peach added a late empty net goal. Mark Yetman had a strong game in net for the Cats. The game was marked by a very scary incident in the 1st period when Chris Peach slid head first into the boards behind the Stony Plain net after diving for a loose puck at the side of the net and getting his feet tangled up in the stick of goaltender wade Walters. Peach lay motionless on the ice for several minutes while being attended to by trainers from both teams along with medical staff. A stretcher was immediately brought out but to the amazemenet of everyone Chris was able to finally get to his feet and skated to the bench unassisted. He later returned to play and scored the Cataracts final goal. There was another anxious moment for cats fans when teamates Ryan Desrosiers and Chad Earle collided at centre ice just 40 secs into the game. Both players were unable to get to their feet for a number of minutes but eventually shook off the effects of the hit and return to play later in the period. Andrew Brennan was named Player of the Game for the Cataracts.

The Cataracts lost their first game at the Allan Cup in Lloydminster dropping a 5-2 decision to the Southeast Prarie Thunder of Manitoba. The Cataracts opened the scoring mid-way through the second period on a goal by recent addition Matt Thomey. The Thunder evened things up before the end of the period on a shot from the point by Rob Smith that bounced off a skate before getting past goaltender Mark Yetman. Things unraveled for the Cataracts in the third as they gave up four straight before Andrew Brennan got the Cats second goal late in the game. The team looks for a bounce-back game this afternoon against the Rosetown Red Wings from Saskatchewan.
